ZOTYE AUTO Makes a Comeback: Can It Become a Case Study of an Automaker Rising Again?

Sep. 18, 2026

On September 14, ZOTYE AUTO published a message on its official WeChat account titled “The First Trial-Production White Body of the International Version of ZOTYE Wink Y01 Successfully Rolled Off the Production Line.” According to the announcement, ZOTYE AUTO has reached an important milestone in the research and trial-production process. The first trial-production white body of the international version of the Wink Y01 (S03) was successfully completed, marking a phased breakthrough in vehicle development and the start of a new stage focused on accelerating mass trial production.

For an automaker that has been out of production for several years and whose complete-vehicle business had almost come to a standstill, the announcement appears to send a clear signal: ZOTYE is still in the game and has not given up.

Based on the information released through ZOTYE AUTO's official WeChat account, we can trace the company's progress toward resuming production:

At the end of June this year, the Wink Y01 completed its styling freeze and engineering data release. Most component suppliers had been officially selected, while vehicle and component testing and validation were progressing in an orderly manner. On September 3, the mold factory at ZOTYE's Yongkang production base fully resumed operations, and molds for the new model were successfully delivered. The painting line completed its renovation and entered the production stage, while the four major manufacturing processes—stamping, welding, painting, and final assembly—gradually restarted. On September 9, the company held a launch meeting for the mass trial production of the international version of the Wink Y01. The new vehicle officially entered the countdown to SOP mass production.

According to ZOTYE's official statement, the company's return strategy is to go overseas first, then return to the domestic market.” The new Wink Y01 is positioned as an A0-class pure electric vehicle. It is developed on the S pure-electric small-car technology platform and is mainly targeted at overseas markets, with a focus on regions such as ASEAN, South Asia, Africa, and Latin America.

For ZOTYE at this stage, avoiding the intense competition in China's domestic new-energy vehicle market and focusing first on overseas markets does indeed appear to be a relatively cautious approach.

However, in its September 14 announcement, ZOTYE also included a risk warning. The completion of the first trial-production white body represents progress during the vehicle development and trial-production stage. It is not expected to have a significant impact on the company's current operating results, nor does it constitute a commitment by the company regarding the vehicle's subsequent mass production, market launch, sales, or operating performance. The vehicle still needs to complete multiple development and validation processes, including final assembly, performance calibration, and reliability testing. The progress of the project remains subject to various factors, including technological iterations, supply-chain support, overseas market conditions, and industry policies. Therefore, the timing of mass production and overseas market launch remains uncertain. The company also disclosed that it continues to face certain financial pressures. Subsequent mass production and market deployment will require continuous financial investment, and there remains uncertainty regarding the availability of sufficient funds.

Looking back over the past few years, automakers such as HiPhi, WM Motor, and Neta Auto have all stated after production stoppages that they would work toward resuming operations. However, judging from subsequent news reports, there has yet to be a successful example of an automaker that fell into serious operational difficulties and then fully returned to normal production.

The particular challenge facing the automotive industry lies in its enormous upstream supply-chain system. Every automaker experiencing financial or operational difficulties has complicated debt relationships with its suppliers. Without resolving outstanding payment issues, it is difficult to secure a stable supply of components, making the resumption of vehicle production extremely difficult.

Some media outlets have analyzed ZOTYE AUTO's financial results for the first half of 2026. The company's total revenue for the first half of the year was only RMB 190 million, with more than 85% of its revenue coming from auto parts and door-related businesses. The complete-vehicle manufacturing segment contributed almost no significant volume of vehicle sales revenue.

Therefore, based on the information currently available, it can only be said that ZOTYE has taken the first step toward restoring complete-vehicle production. Whether this comeback will ultimately succeed remains to be tested by time.
