By mid-2026, a large number of domestic passenger vehicle seat sourcing announcements have been released, marking a critical transition period in the industry’s localization and domestic substitution process. Currently, the global automotive seat market remains dominated by the four major foreign suppliers — Adient, Lear, Magna, and Faurecia — which hold the leading market shares. In China, the market has developed a competitive landscape characterized by Yanfeng leading the industry, followed by multiple strong domestic players, with local suppliers rapidly rising alongside the growth of the new energy vehicle (NEV) sector.

Compared with the situation ten years ago, when foreign companies dominated the mid-to-high-end market while domestic suppliers mainly supported entry-level models, the industry’s current supply structure has become clearly segmented. For new energy vehicles (NEVs) priced below RMB 300,000, the localization of complete seat systems for high-volume models has largely been achieved. In the RMB 300,000–500,000 premium domestic segment (such as the AITO M9, Li Auto L Series, and Xiaomi SU7 Max), domestic and foreign suppliers are now competing on relatively equal terms. However, core seat assemblies for luxury vehicles priced above RMB 500,000, global vehicle platforms, and high-end MPVs are still largely controlled by foreign suppliers. As the supporting market for mid-range new energy vehicles in China gradually becomes saturated, the growth model relying solely on domestic substitution has reached its ceiling. The second half of industry competition is now officially shifting toward the global arena.


1. A Clear Industry Segmentation Pattern Has Emerged: Domestic Suppliers Take Integration, While Foreign Players Retain Core Technologies


By analyzing the three major best-selling vehicle platforms — AITO, Xiaomi, and Li Auto — the division of responsibilities between domestic and foreign suppliers has become increasingly clear. Within the AITO lineup, the complete seats for the M5 and M7 models are exclusively supplied by Yanfeng. The M9’s zero-gravity seats adopt a joint supply model involving Yanfeng and Faurecia. Processes including foam production, seat covers, and final assembly have been fully localized, while core seat frames and precision mechanical mechanisms remain largely controlled by foreign suppliers. For the Xiaomi SU7, Yanfeng serves as the primary supplier of complete seat systems for the first-generation model. Its Jingqingyuan production base has an annual capacity of 450,000 complete seat sets and simultaneously undertakes orders from Xiaomi and Li Auto. For Li Auto, the complete seat systems of the L6–L8 models are exclusively supplied by Joyson Electronics, while the L9 adopts a joint supply model between Joyson Electronics and Adient. Adient maintains control over key components such as the second-row zero-gravity mechanical massage modules and high-end seat structures.

A common industry pattern has now taken shape: domestic companies dominate large-scale segments such as complete seat system integration, foam production, upholstery materials, and conventional seat adjustment components, while foreign suppliers continue to maintain their advantages in high-barrier areas, including high-end lightweight seat frames, multi-mode mechanical massage systems, and zero-gravity seat actuation mechanisms. With decades of technological accumulation and extensive patent portfolios, international suppliers still hold strong positions in these core technology fields. Key products such as Adient’s multi-function massage systems and Brose Sitech’s lightweight seat frame technologies remain technical frontiers that domestic manufacturers are unlikely to fully replace in the short term.

2. The Core of Domestic Breakthrough: Not Just Cost Advantages, but Faster Response and Greater Influence Over Product Definition


The rapid replacement of foreign suppliers in the mid-range seat market by Chinese companies is not simply driven by lower prices. Instead, domestic suppliers have achieved differentiation through three key capabilities. 


The first is their localized response speed. The development cycle for seats in new energy vehicle (NEV) models from emerging automakers has generally been shortened to 12–18 months. Yanfeng’s close-supporting supply model, combining Beijing final assembly with Tianjin seat frame production, enables a supply response time of just two hours. Joyson Electronics completed the process from supplier nomination to start of production (SOP) for the Li Auto L6 in only 14 months. In contrast, foreign suppliers often require approval from their global headquarters even for single-module parameter changes, resulting in cycles of up to three months. This makes it difficult for them to keep pace with the rapid iteration cycles of Chinese automakers.


The second is integrated cockpit collaboration capability. Leading domestic suppliers such as Yanfeng and Nobo have developed full-stack business models covering seats, interior systems, and acoustics. Their zero-gravity seats can directly integrate with ambient lighting, climate control, and suspension system tuning, allowing automakers to work with a single supplier. In contrast, foreign seat suppliers are often focused on individual product lines, requiring coordination among multiple Tier 1 suppliers for cockpit integration, resulting in significantly higher collaboration costs compared with domestic solutions.


The third is the shift in product definition authority. In the past, standards for zero-gravity seats, adaptive algorithms, and bio-based material applications were mainly defined by foreign suppliers. Today, solutions such as the suspension-linked zero-gravity seat system of the AITO M9 and Yanfeng’s XiM27 intelligent adaptive seat are jointly defined by automakers and domestic Tier 1 suppliers, with shared intellectual property rights. The supply model is shifting from “foreign suppliers provide whatever technologies they have” to “suppliers and automakers jointly develop what the market demands.” The first-mover technological advantages once held by foreign companies are rapidly being eroded.

3. Globalization Becomes a Strategic Necessity, with Two Major Challenges Still Ahead


As the growth potential of China’s new energy vehicle (NEV) supply market gradually narrows, the next battlefield for leading automotive seat manufacturers will inevitably shift overseas. The industry has already shown clear signals of this transition. Joyson Electronics expanded its capabilities by acquiring Germany’s Grammer, gaining access to European premium vehicle supply qualifications. In 2025, the company secured global vehicle platform sourcing projects from European luxury brands, marking the beginning of the realization phase for its global expansion strategy. Shuanglin’s HDM horizontal drive systems rank second globally and first domestically, making the company a key secondary supplier to the four major international seat manufacturers. Its latest fundraising efforts are focused on expanding overseas production capacity. Yanfeng has already entered the global supply chains of Mercedes-Benz and Tesla, while its intelligent seat solutions are being promoted to European automakers.

However, domestic enterprises still face two critical hurdles in their full-scale global expansion. The first is the barrier of foundational technology patents. Core patents—such as those for lightweight high-end seat structures, long-lasting low-hysteresis foaming formulations, and AI-driven seat control algorithms—remain concentrated in the hands of foreign companies; meanwhile, the recycled content in domestic bio-based foam typically ranges from only 10% to 15%, representing a significant generational gap compared to the 30%-plus levels achieved by foreign competitors, necessitating long-term R&D efforts in underlying materials and algorithms. The second challenge lies in global regulatory compliance and production capacity deployment. The EU’s updated End-of-Life Vehicles (ELV) directive has established clear, tiered mandatory standards for recycled plastics and requires carbon footprint traceability for all seat components; while foreign firms have spent two decades establishing their global production and compliance frameworks, domestic enterprises still require a two-to-three-year cycle to build overseas plants, implement carbon accounting, and establish material passport systems.

2026 marks not the end of domestic substitution, but the starting point of a shift in industry dynamics: the focus is moving from capturing incremental growth in the domestic mid-range new energy vehicle (NEV) sector to penetrating the global high-end market for existing volume. The true "second half" of the game for domestic seat manufacturers involves transitioning from competing primarily on cost and speed to a comprehensive contest of technology, regulatory compliance, and global operational capabilities. If leading domestic companies continue to secure contracts with global luxury brands in the second half of the year, it will signal their formal entry into a phase of head-to-head competition with international giants.
